Legion 44 Classroom Curriculum

Bring Legion 44 and carbon removal to your classroom! Carbon Removal is an emerging field that will need a motivated and educated workforce.

High School Curriculum Opportunities

Each of the high school curriculum packages developed by the Legion 44 team, are in alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards for instruction. The specific standards they fulfill are listed on the Lesson Plan cover sheet.

Human Sustainability Project

In this three-week project-based learning experience, students will investigate the intersection of resource availability, energy transitions, and climate change mitigation. Using Legion 44 as a launchpad, they’ll explore how carbon removal, energy infrastructure, and sustainable resource management impact long-term environmental and societal well-being.

🌍 Systems Thinking in Action: Students analyze real-world constraints, from material dependencies to energy trade-offs, using interactive models and case studies.
🖥️ Hands-On Computational Modeling: Using En-ROADS and PhET Simulations, students compare energy and carbon management strategies.
⚖️ Real-World Debate & Decision-Making: Students develop data-driven proposals, defend their solutions in peer discussions, and refine them based on feedback.

Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (HS-ESS3-1 to HS-ESS3-6), this comprehensive lesson plan includes:
✔️ A detailed teacher’s guide with discussion prompts and assessments
✔️ Student worksheets and modeling tools for hands-on engagement
✔️ Project templates and rubrics for seamless implementation

Engineering Design Project

Take your students beyond the textbook with this three-week project-based learning experience on carbon removal! Using Legion 44 as a launchpad, students will explore cutting-edge carbon management solutions, apply the engineering design process, and develop data-driven proposals for tackling global CO2 accumulation.

🔬 Hands-on Learning: Students research real-world technologies like Direct Air Capture, Biochar, and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, then design their own carbon removal solutions.
🖥️ Interactive Modeling: Using tools like Road to 10 Gigatons, En-ROADS, and PhET Simulations, students model the impact of their designs and analyze trade-offs.
🗣️ Critical Thinking & Debate: Peer reviews and structured debates challenge students to defend their ideas while considering constraints like cost, energy use, and feasibility.

Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (HS-ETS1-1 to HS-ETS1-4), this ready-to-use lesson plan includes:
✔️ A structured teacher’s guide with detailed activities and assessments
✔️ Discussion questions to spark student engagement
✔️ Project templates and grading rubrics for easy implementation

Bring real-world climate problem-solving into your classroom—download now and inspire the next generation of engineers and environmental leaders!
